Managing a game library comes down to three habits: move installs between drives with the launcher's own tools, delete shader caches and duplicate launchers you no longer use, and stop letting every platform install to the default drive. The problem grew fast — many major 2024-2025 releases ship at 100-150 GB, so a 1 TB drive that once held dozens of games now holds fewer than ten. The fixes below require no new hardware unless your total library already exceeds your total space.
This is a maintenance guide. Before deleting anything outside a game launcher, confirm the folder belongs to a game and not to documents you care about.
What is really using your space?
Check before you delete. On Windows, Settings, System, Storage shows categories, but the launcher views matter more: Steam, the Epic Games Store, EA app, Battle.net, and Xbox each list per-game disk usage. Sort by size. In most libraries, two or three giant titles plus forgotten early-access installs account for most of the problem. Also look at shader cache folders — Steam and NVIDIA's driver software both accumulate them, and caches for uninstalled games are safe to clear.
How do you move a game to another drive without reinstalling?
Each major launcher has a built-in move. In Steam: Settings, Storage, select the two drives, check games, and press Move. On the Epic Games Store: open the game's page in your library, click the three dots, and Uninstall is the wrong button — use the Move option if present, or change the install path. On console, both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles move games between internal and external storage from the storage management menu. These moves take time but preserve updates and saves metadata; deleting and redownloading wastes bandwidth and often re-downloads more than the move copies.
Where do saves actually live?
Rarely next to the game. Saves sit in per-game folders under Documents, in hidden AppData directories, or in the launcher's cloud storage. This is why deleting a game is usually safe — but back up saves separately before uninstalling anything old, and check whether the title supports cloud saves in its launcher properties. A game you remove keeps nothing on its own unless the developer chose a local-only save location.
Should you uninstall or archive?
Uninstall games you finished and will not replay within months; archive games you cycle back to. Consoles and PC launchers keep your settings, cloud saves, and entitlements either way — deleting an install never deletes ownership. The one exception: games with server-side patches that get deprecated may reinstall at a different version, which is rare and outside your control.
How do you stop the default-drive problem?
Open every launcher you use and change the default installation folder to the drive with the most free space. Steam: Settings, Storage, set the default. Epic, EA app, Battle.net, and the Xbox app each have the same setting in their install options. Five minutes here prevents the recurring chore of moving the game you just bought.
What about launchers you no longer use?
They are the quiet leak. An idle launcher still holds game files, cached updates, and its own program folder — occasionally tens of gigabytes from a title you played once for a free promotion. Uninstall the games first through the launcher, then the launcher itself. Check the common library directories afterwards, because some leave empty game folders behind that only manual deletion clears.
When is an upgrade actually needed?
When your total active library exceeds your total storage, or when the games you play monthly rotate faster than you enjoy managing them. Internal NVMe drives in the 1-2 TB range are the practical upgrade on PC; consoles have their own validated expansion slots — a PS5 requires a PCIe 4.0-class M.2 drive with a heatsink, and the Xbox Series family uses its proprietary expansion cards. Buy capacity once, with headroom, rather than a small drive that repeats the problem in a year.
Do you still need to defragment or trim anything?
Not manually on modern systems. Solid-state drives use TRIM, and both Windows and the consoles run it automatically in the background. Old advice about defragmenting does not apply to SSDs and adds wear without benefit. The one related check: make sure TRIM is enabled — on Windows, the built-in optimizer reports it — and leave roughly a tenth of any SSD free so the controller has room to work efficiently. That free-space margin does more for sustained performance than any maintenance tool.
What routine keeps it clean?
Once a month: sort each launcher by size, uninstall anything untouched for three months, clear shader caches in your GPU driver software, and empty the launcher download cache. Ten minutes monthly prevents the weekend-long purge. Keep a simple rule — one drive holds active games, another holds the backlog — and moving a title between them becomes a conscious decision instead of an emergency.
